On December 1st 2009, the full committee of 98 councillors of Wiltshire Council, considered the option of formerly adopting the Great Bustard flag as the official flag for the county of Wiltshire. The flag had been previously adopted by the old Wiltshire County Council in 2007 but following the formation of the new Wiltshire Council in April of 2009, it was proposed to debate the acceptance of the flag along with an alternative design of a reproduction of a white horse submitted by another resident.

Mike Prior prepared a complete history of the procedure undertaken from 2005 through to 2007 in the creation of the flag and following a presentation made by Mike in the min counicil chamber to the chairman, cabinet and councillors of the new Wiltshire Council, a vote was taken and a unanimous acceptance was the result.

The council will now contact the Flag Institute detailing the events up to and including December 1st.

The Wiltshire Flag is now two years old, it was first raised outside County Hall in Trowbridge on 05 06 07, and following the birth after 177 years, of the first three Great Bustard chicks on June 3rd 2009, and in celebration of this momentous event, the flag was released into the public domain, it is now formally registered with The Flag Institute.

The flag has been an overwhelming success throughout the county and worldwide, and many photographs can be be viewed on the gallery page of this website.

First high profile public appearance was at the National Town Criers competition in Trowbridge (June 07) and the West Wilts Show (July 07).

The flags are becoming popular with campers, caravanners and people attending concerts and other outdoor events, as a means of identifying the county from which they hail.

A double page spread article in Wiltshire Life magazine provided a large amount of interest, resulting in sales of the flag to all areas of the county.

It is a real tribute to your design, and your determination, that the Wiltshire flag has met with the support and popularity it has. But then, a really good design is half the battle. Michael Faul FFI, Editor Flagmaster
